Just for You Selfish Sewing book - Sarah Markos

Just for You  is a compilation book made up of 24 projects from bloggers all over the web. You can get the book pretty cheap on Amazon  (aff link) or a signed by me copy in my Etsy Shop

The Faux Wrap Skirt was designed by Jen Schuman of iCandy Handmade. I love this skirt because it's made without a pattern. You just use your own measurements to determine how to cut it out.

The fabric I used was Cotton Jersey Spandex from Girl Charlee Fabrics. It's so soft and the perfect weight for a skirt. Want to make a skirt like this?   Here are some tips to help you get going!

3 Tips for Making the Faux Wrap Skirt

1. Be Careful Drawing the curve!!

It is very easy to eyeball the curve and have a wrap skirt that comes up very high in the front if you aren't careful. A gradual curve that doesn't cut off too much of the corner will make a skirt that is about the same length all the way around like the striped one I just made.

A more dramatic curve that cuts more off of the corner makes the wrap skirt look shorter in the front because of the overlap. This happened when I made this flowered skirt a few years ago.

This one came up a good 4 inches higher in in the front than I had intended. This may not matter much if you are sewing a long skirt like I was but if you are sewing it short and suddenly the front comes up a lot higher than you expected it might be a problem. Just beware!

2. Use Wooly Nylon thread for the hem

Using wooly nylon thread to hem the skirt will make it so you can stretch it without breaking the stitches. Don't know what wooly nylon is? I wrote post all about it with tips on how to use it in a regular sewing machine. Find that post all about Wooly Nylon HERE. Instead of using a double needle to hem this skirt I just sewed 2 rows of stitching to achieve the same look.

3. Don't be afraid to make adjustments

Whenever you sew something for yourself there is always a point where it comes down to customizing your fit. After taking all the suggested measurements and sewing my skirt up I tried it on and realized the waistband was a little too loose for my liking.

It's designed to be a fold over waistband but I'm not going to fold mine over.  No problem!  I easily cut off the seam  and took in the waistband a little before sewing the waistband to the skirt again.  One thing I love about sewing the seams on the serger is that the seam allowance is so small. I was able to cut the seam allowance off to make the adjustments without losing much fabric. No unpicking necessary.

Cut off a serged seam instead of unpicking it.

I hope these tips help and that you'll try making this pattern. Let me know if you make one, I want to see it! Tag me @bluesusanmakes on instagram and I'll find it.
