Want to learn how to sew a simple Lanyard? They make the perfect gift for teachers, moms, coworkers, college students, and teen drivers. Basically all the hard to buy for people. There are lots of ways to make a lanyard. Here’s how I do it…

How to Sew a Simple Lanyard

Supplies:

Cutting:

  • Cut 2 strips 2” x 19.5” cotton fabric
  • Cut 1 strip 2” x 28” interfacing - optional

Sewing Steps:

1. Stitch cotton strips together at the ends, with a 1/4 inch seam allowance, to make 1 long strip. Press the seam open.

2. Fold the edges toward the center a little less than 1/2” leaving a gap in the middle and press flat.

3. Fold in half lengthwise matching the folded edges and press flat.

4. Open one of the folded sides and slide the interfacing strip inside. Refold the folds and hold it in place using binding clips.

5. Slide the swivel clasp onto one folded end and push it to the middle of the folded lanyard strip so that it's out of the way.

6. Open the folds on each end and and sew the two ends together making one big loop (now the swivel clasp can't fall off). Trim the interfacing to stay out of the seam line.

7. Finger press the seam open and refold the folds. Add clips to hold it in place and keep it folded.

8. Sew along both sides of the lanyard about 1/8” from the edge. Slide the swivel clasp out of the way as you sew around the loop. Backstitch when you meet the starting stitches.

9. Find a seam line and position the swivel clasp to sit right at a seam line.

10. Sew the two sides of the lanyard together just above the swivel clasp. Backstitch 2-3 times across the width of the lanyard.

And you are done!!

Easy peasy! Save this for the next time you need a quick handmade gift! This would also be a great simple project to teach a friend to sew or to teach in a little sewing class.
