I had so much fun remaking this cape. It is a design I made many years ago for my first son and it has been a favorite dress up for all my boys through the years. It was getting a little tattered so I thought this littlest boy could use a new one. I love taking a little time to make costumes that are used over and over for dress-up. I'm sure this one will be just as loved as the other one has.

About the Hooded Bat Cape pattern

This pattern is sized to fit about 3-4T. The cape length is about 38’’ from the nape of the neck to the pointed bottom. To make this cape you will be making 2 hoods. One will be the outer hood and one will be used as the lining. I’ll show you how to put the hoods together, sew them to the single layer cape, hem the sides of the cape, and stitch on a Velcro closure. The bottom of the cape will remain unhemmed.

Types of fabric to use for a Hooded Bat Cape

For this project you’ll need a sturdy black knit with edges that won’t roll when cut. A knit with 4 way stretch is ideal but not necessary. I used polyester spandex matte lamé jersey for the cape in the photos. It has a sheen to it on one side that makes it look a little like a soft vinyl but it’s stretchy and has great drape. I can't find this fabric since Fabric.com went out of business. Any black polyester knit will work if the edge lays flat after cutting and stretching.  You can also sew this cape with a lightweight Scuba knit.  The points on the bottom of the cape we be left un-hemmed so it's important that the fabric you choose doesn't roll or fray.

Here are a few more photos from when my older boys were younger of ways we turned this simple cape into a full costume using PJs or a simple Batman shirt and belt with yellow felt wrapped around it.

And here is one last Batman photo. This is my favorite picture of  the recent photo shoot. That's an everyday Batman right there. Complete with Star Wars Yoda Crocs :)
