Nine Patch Plus quilt

Today I have a little Nine Patch Plus Quilt recipe to share with you. I love making baby quilts because of how fast they are to sew up. I like them even better when the pattern is one that I can just cut out and sew up without having to spend time laying it out just right. This quilt uses a mix of one dominant print and five solids based on the print's color palette. The result is a simple but striking quilt that is perfect for beginners and speedy to sew if you're someone who doesn't want to spend weeks on a project, like me!

Quilt Ingredients

The ingredients for this Nine Patch Plus Quilt recipe are: one main print fabric that dictates the color palette, 5 solid colors pulled from that color palette, 1 high contrast fabric for the nine patch centers and the sashing cornerstones, and a low volume background fabric. If you assign your colors to the colors in layout you don't even have to think about how to distribute the colors evenly, the work is already done for you.

  • Cut 24 squares 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" from the Print fabric
  • Cut 8 squares 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" from each of the Solid fabrics #1-5
  • Cut 25 squares 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" from the centers and cornerstones fabric
  • Cut 64 squares 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" from the Background fabric
  • Cut 24 rectangles 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" from the Background fabric

Instructions for Mindless Sewing

This beginner 9-patch quilt is the perfect project when you need a little mindless sewing. I've listed these instructions in a way that you can follow and chain piece this whole quilt together without laying it out, except for the very last steps of course.

Sew all seams with a scant 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Make the 9-Patch Blocks

1. Bring your stacks of squares to the machine and sew:

  • 12 print squares to a background square
  • 4 of each Solid (#1-5) fabric square to a background square
  • 16 dark center squares to a background square

2. Complete the top and bottom rows of the 9-patch by sewing one matching color square to the opposite side of the white square. Complete the center rows of the 9-patch by sewing a white square to the opposite side of the dark square.

3. Sew the rows together to make SIXTEEN 9-Patch blocks altogether. You should have 6 Print blocks, and 2 of each of the Solid color blocks.

Sew the Sashing Strips

4. Take the remaining 9 dark squares and we are going to use these as cornerstones to help line up the sashing strips as we sew them to the 9-patch squares. Sew each dark square to a short end of a sashing rectangle.

5. Take 2 of these units and sew them together with a dark square between 2 rectangles. Repeat 3 times.

6. Finish the strips by adding 1 rectangle to the end of the strip on the side with the dark square.

8. Sew 1 rectangle strip to each 9 patch block in the 1st 3 columns.

9. Sew these units together to make 4 rows.

10. Sew a sashing strip in between each row of blocks. Matching up the seams where they intersect.

And you're done with your Nine Patch Plus Quilt!! Make a 'Quilt Sandwich' and quilt it as desired.
