Tissue Paper Flowers
These easy to make Tissue Paper flowers are the perfect last minute craft to make for Mother's Day, teacher appreciation week, or just summer fun. Follow along for my tissue paper flower tutorial.
All you need is some tissue paper, scissors, and a pipe cleaner. Big kids can make these too. It's fun to get creative with these, making different sizes and colors, and even combining tissue layers to make a multicolor bloom.

I made a bunch of these for our children's organization at church to hand out to their moms after we sang to them on Mother's Day Sunday. We sang a song about "blossoms of blue"

Tissue Paper Flower Tutorial
1. Start by taking a piece of 15" x 20" tissue paper. Fold it into quarters by folding it in half then in half again.

Take the short side of the rectangle and fold it up about 1". Then fold it back 1". Continue to fold back and forth to in an accordian fashion, like you would fold it if you were making a fan. It doesn't have to be perfect but try to get the folds to line up as best you can.

When you get to the end, trim off any length that doesn't quite cover the full width.
Fold the strip in half lengthwise.

Take some sharp craft scissors and cut the ends in to a curved or pointed shape, cutting through all layers at once. Different shapes on the ends give your flower a different look. You can have fun experimenting here.

Open up the center fold and wrap one end of a pipe cleaner around it, twisting the pipe cleaner around itself to secure it. I think it looks like a little dragonfly at this stage.

Fan out one side and gently pull apart one layer of tissue. I like to start with the top layer. If you pull too hard here you will tear the tissue and if that happens don't stress too much about it. Just adjust your technique a little and go slowly. Spread out the folds where you are pulling and that will make it a little easier to pull the tissue paper out.

Pull out the bottom layer next in the same fashion. Then separate the middle two layers.

Repeat these steps with to separated the layers on the second half of the flower.

Fluff out the flower a little and arrange your layers so they are spread out evenly. I like to push up the bottom layer so it extends out like real flower does.

You are done! Now you can leave it like this or you can put it on a pencil or stick to give it a more sturdy stem. I ordered a box of small green Golf pencils for when I made these to hand out for Mother's Day, but any pencil in your drawer will do.
To add a pencil for a stem, line up the pencil with the pipe cleaner and add a dab of hot glue at the top. Start wrapping the pipe cleaner around the pencil.

Add a line of hot glue a little at a time and continue wrapping the pipe cleaner around it all the way.

Add one more dab of hot glue on top of the eraser and press it into the center of the flower. And you are done!

Now you can experiment! Make different color flowers, change the shape at the end for a different look. You can even make multicolor flowers by layering different colors of tissue paper together. Fill up a pretty vase, or hand deliver your flower to your favorite teacher.

Happy Crafting!
